That said, criminal cases have a high burden of proof \u2014 prosecutors must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Many cases do not proceed if there is insufficient evidence, particularly in older cases where physical evidence is unavailable, or witnesses are difficult to locate.<\/p>\n
Some states have eliminated statutes of limitations for prosecuting clergy sexual abuse, allowing charges to be filed regardless of when the abuse occurred. In states where time limits still exist, prosecutors may be unable to file charges if too much time has passed since the abuse.<\/p>\n
