NP often represents governmental entities (states, counties, cities, or political subdivisions) and other sovereigns in lawsuits seeking to recover monetary damages. When a governmental entity is a party to litigation, the presence of policy issues, political concerns, and media visibility presents unique challenges—as well as opportunities. NP has the experience and know-how to represent governmental entities in the most sensitive and important litigation.
For example, NP is one of the five Texas firms that obtained a landmark $17.2 billion settlement for the State of Texas in the tobacco litigation, which began NP’s long history of representing governmental entities in significant and critical litigation. In 2016, NP obtained a historic settlement for the State of Florida and more than twenty governmental entities in their litigation against British Petroleum over the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. In addition, NP represented more than 1,000 Florida businesses, ranging from small restaurants to publicly traded corporations, against BP. NP also successfully represented the States of Alaska, Montana, and Utah in litigation against pharmaceutical manufacturers involving false marketing and labeling of antipsychotic drugs.
Nix Patterson will vigorously pursue the compensation you deserve for your catastrophic injury case, sexual assault case, or other PTSD-related event.
NP achieved similar success in lawsuits representing sovereign Native American Tribal Nations. In August 2015, NP resolved long-standing litigation for The Choctaw Nation and The Chickasaw Nation alleging that the United States’ government failed to properly protect tribal interests in the sale of more than 1.3 million acres of tribal timberlands from 1908 to 1940. That case settled for $186 million. NP currently represents the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation against the State of Connecticut for $600 million for taking its land without due compensation, and the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe against the United States for $200 million for taking its federal water rights without due compensation.
